Great fun tonight...even for a small field. Race 1 saw some difficulties getting underway.....first Smokey popped a motor on the start. Restart #1 would see Boza suffer an identical fate. The third attempt almost got off w/o a hitch...except Smokey would jump the start and pick up a drive through penalty. The Tony had the option of continuing, or slowing up to allow Smokey to rejoin the field...a glimmer of sympathy would shine through, allowing Smokey to regroup. The restart would see the Capri of Tony and the Porsche of Helios break away from the other two. The field would gradually spread out as cars would have occasional offs. Helios would make the fewest mistakes, going on to take the win. Tony & Boza would round out the podium. Smokey's race would wind up short, living up to his name, as his motor went up in smoke just before the halfway point at the bottom of the hill heading into T2.
Race 2 would have much more excitement w/ the Capri & Porsche on the front row...and they would stay that way all the way down the hill, leading into T2, with the Capri ultimately coming out in front. The others would have their work cut out for them trying to get past the Porsche, that was proving to be quite wide. Both would eventually succeed in the final corner. From there the 3 car train formed, and would continue this way for a few laps. Boza would be the first to blink, going into a slow spin coming off the final corner. Free of Boza, Smokey would set sail after Tony, slowing dropping the Porsche off his tail. Boza would be the first to retire w/ a blown motor at the top of the hill...with the leaders narrowly missing him. A battle of epic proportions would erupt between the Capri and M1...including a side by side run through the corkscrew! The battle would be short lived however, as Tony would push Smokey to the breaking point....literally. Heading off the final corner onto the front straight, Smokey's M1 engine would erupt into a ball of flames. Tony's brief exclamation of victory turned to defeat as Tony's Capri would decide to show up the M1 by exploding into an even bigger fireball just as he passed the crippled M1, with fire engulfing the entire cockpit. The tandem fireball on the front straight would hand the victory to Helios, piloting the notoriously tricky 935, to complete the first race weekend w/ a sweep of both events.
