Any of you guys have this yet?

It has taken over my entire week besides race night.

For anyone doubtful due to it being early access, it's a damn site more stable than the old mod and it's usually just the odd server side bug which strikes now and again.

If you do have it, give me a shout and we can go hunting for beans.

I don't have it but I've been interested in it. I love Arma in general and this just seems like a great idea for a mod.

What is your approach and play style around the mod if you don't mind me asking?

EDIT: Just realized you are probably talking about the Alpha of the DayZ standalone mod right?

So I downloaded it and I must say its pretty fun in a masochistic sort of way. Nothing like starting with nothing and being happy to see a pair of cargo pants!

I've died lots and have had a few times where I've had some good gear. I'm in pretty good shape right now but certainly safety in numbers! Oh and I have beans, Spaghetti, and some sardines even.

What timezone are you in Tartan?

GMT and usually on from 8pm to around 1am.

Play style is usually keep out of trouble and head up North as soon as possible to avoid any fights over those cargo pants you speak of lol (I was lucky to see a fist fight over a pair once)
Plenty of loot to be had up there if you can avoid the snipers.
Once tooled up I like to hunt down bandits or if i find a Mosin i usually park up on a hill and take out any of those annoying fresh spawn killers.

Some sick individuals on there though, they seem to get a kick out of feeding people rotten food or disinfectant lol. That should all settle once 2000 more zoms are added after the servers are upgraded.

Have seen some really interesting updates incoming too and some not so interesting (2 variants of poop?)

Crap! Our time zones are going to mesh at all unfortunately that is 1pm to 6pm my time and I am usually still on shift at those times.

Too bad because our play style would mesh nicely.

We actually have a DAYZ/Epoch server running here at the house. It's the mod, not the Stand alone. I figure there is no reason to buy the Alpha when the mod is basically the same at this point.

Boy did I do a stupid thing last night after class. I was heading up north with my mostly kitted up guy (I have nicknamed him "Neville") so I could get some milspec weapons and kit when I took a break.

I checked around to make sure there were no Zeds/Walkers/Biters (whatever you want to call them) and then I alt-tab'd out of the game to check on something. Sure enough I tab back in and I see a female zed just finishing me off and the screen goes black to a "You are dead".

Man was I pissed! (More at myself than anything)

But it worked out as I re spawned in the same area, worked my way up equipment wise, found some better stuff and completed my run up north by the airport. Came away fully milspec'd out but a little hurting for health after several zed run ins. So now I have to lay low for a bit, get healed up and then I think I'll push north east towards the opposite coast.

Damn you Tartan... hooked on running around this wasteland. Its my nightly reward for when I get all my school crap done. Maybe we can get together on a weekend or something when our time zones match a bit better.

Lol I had an absolute nightmare on a night server the other night, ran the whole length the NE airfieldd to Elektro just to be gunned down.
When I find the dummy I spat I will be back on lol.

Lots of folks are having serious issues on the servers since the patch from the comments on the forums.

I went through 4 characters in a 40 min span as I couldn't find a weapon and I kept messing up dancing around the zombie and hitting him at the same time.

Will try again this weekend to kit up my guy.

This early access is quite disappointing given the amount of time the developers have had with the game. Not to mention the completely recycled elements which comprise about 60% of the game. There are mods such as Epoch that are more stable and offer more content for the low price of..... free. Yes I do realize this is an early release and the game is in alpha. However, as said before given the amount of time Dean Rocket Hall and his team has had with this game the results are less than satisfactory. Just my two cents, I will be awaiting a more polished release candidate preferably not using the same map that has been used since the creation of the DayZ mod.

Not having played the Mod on Arma I'm having a blast in the standalone.

Last night I discovered the fun of night servers. Folks generally avoid them because they are WAY too dark. Well I saw a post about turning up the Gamma to the point that it looks like daylight but that didn't seem like the right way to go for me.

I adjusted my Gamma so out in the open it was starlight bright, wooded areas were darker and buildings were near pitch black. It was perfect. Soon as the moon came out in full it was a blast!

I figured I'd choose a low population on a server that had only about 5 minutes of reboot time on it to get a better chance of good loot.

I spawned fresh in Berezino and hit the apartment complex straight off. That netted me some better clothes, backpack, firefighter's axe, and a shotgun and a hacksaw. I used the hacksaw right away and turned the shotgun into its much better (for CQB) sawed-off version which had the added benefit of taking a "worn" shotgun and turning it into a "pristine" sawed-off.

From there I hit the hospital which was a bust, the market which was meh. I headed NE to the lumber mill and that got me a few more items. Then I turned my attention to the NE airfield for some milspec loot. Took me a bit to get there and when I did, I saw a couple of guys with flashlights doing a bounding overwatch across an open field. Good tactic but not with the flashlights waving like beacons. Given there were two of them full kitted out, I didn't want to engage them unless absolutely necessary.

They hit the NE airfield quick and cleaned it out of any worthwhile loot (I checked quickly after they left). On their way out, they went RIGHT by my position (I was prone) and buddy's flashlight passed right over me but either he didn't notice or didn't care. Both of them left and headed SW. I figured they were going to swoop around towards Vybor and pick up the two bases there and then raid the NW airfield.

I figured I could beat them if I hauled ass straight west over the mountains and only stopping to get some water and food from houses and small towns. At this point I still didn't have any canteens or water bottles so I was dependent on the water pumps at towns/vills/farmhouses.

I saw one other player (mc helmet, backpack, no weapons) on my way to the base but I lost him amongst the buildings. I pushed on and made pretty good time. Only had to deal with a few zeds as I could skirt most of them. It helped I was skipping populated areas for the most part.

I made it to the military base just North of Dichina and it didn't look like anyone had been there. I was able to score a tac vest, jacket, boots, .357 Python, and a 300rd ammo box (no ammo).

Then I zipped north the the next base just below the NW airstrip and again, looked to be the first one there. Scored my M4 in near pristine condition, ammo and magazines for the M4, ammo for the Python and a .45 mag and ammo along with a ruined .45 which I left.

Then I worked the airfield. Found some good stuff in the hangers (mags, ammo, boots, etc) and a hunting pack, another .357 Python and more ammo. Then I heard a shot and the closeness of it in my headset freaked the crap out of me. I literally jumped in my cockpit. The cats that had been resting peacefully fled the room.

I went to ground and looked around. I wasn't shot and wasn't under fire so I started cautiously poking around. I found my two flashlight friends and they had another survivor on his knees at gunpoint with his hands up. He was stripped of everything and they had shot him and were letting him bleed out while they kept him at gunpoint.

I took out my sawed-off and crept up behind them and zapped both of them, one shot each to the head. First guy didn't have a helmet on and he died right away. The second guy took the first shot and spun on me firing. He let off a long burst while trying to dodge but only just tagged me. I switched to my M4 and let him have it center of mass. He went down.

I wasn't sure about the naked guy cause he was up and moving but I told him to stop and he did. I threw him down a bandage which he used as I did the same for myself. I had him stand off a bit and we started the process of looting the bandits.

One had a Mosin and some goodies for it and the other had an M4 that was "ok". Neither of which I wanted so naked guy got those. We divied up the magazines, we each got a medkit, food, and some other stuff. They only had one canteen between the two of them so I gave that to naked guy.

I also gave him one of the .357 Pythons I had. Then I told him I would put the ammo for the Mosin and the magnum's in one of the rooms in the main building and he could recover them after I left. I told him I was heading North and not to follow me. He thanked me for saving him and assured me he wouldn't try and kill me.

After recovering his ammo he booked it off across the open ground of the airfield (this guy won't last long) and I headed north to the police station/small base to finish my looting run.

All in all it was a successful night. Hope you guys enjoyed my little recap of a night in DayZ.

So I am going to add to my own "cheese" factor in the game.

As there is pen and paper as loot in the game, I am going to start keeping a journal strictly from my character's pov.

I will post it up on my hobby site for kicks and giggles.

The interactions in the game are fun! Probably because I have been on the winning side of both combat related ones and the dialogue based ones I took control right away.

As I have read on the forums most folks tend to KoS anybody fully decked out in mil spec gear.

To hopefully give me that brief pause on their side, I am gearing up more to the PMC look but still sticking with browns, greens and blacks so I blend in with the terrain as much as possible.

Oh and I found a UN Blue Beret last night. Couldn't resist adding it to my pack (I served as a peacekeeper on a couple of deployments). I won't wear it of course but I have one!

I also briefly had a copy of the New Testament Bible ah la "Book of Eli" but I opted to swap that out for the Newer Testament called 30rd STANAG.

So after our races on Wednesday night I jumped on to slay some zombies and hopefully grab some specific gear that I was looking for. Well that didn't work out so well as I lost all my gear during a server glitch and I'm not going to lie, I cried a little, seriously there was a tear or two shed. So I left it for the night.

Last night I jumped on a low pop night server to start the process all over again and had some good luck on my spawn getting some equipment right off. I went up to the NE Airfield and went into the main building when I hear footsteps upstairs. I wasn't sure if I was just hearing my own echo so I found a spot under some stairs, took out my axe and waited. Sure enough the footsteps got louder and a guy came down the stairs and went by me and literally stumbled and felt is way along the wall to a room door.

I thought about letting him go by me but I wasn't that far into the game so I chanced it and said "Hi there, I'm friendly so don't shoot me or attack me"

Well this guy freaked right out but in a funny way. He's swearing and saying "Don't shoot, don't kill me please! OMG you scared the crap out of me" and a few other lines along the same vein.

After getting some reassurances from him that if I turned on my flashlight he wouldn't kill me I took the chance and turned it on. More freaking out on his part but in a good way. So we teamed up for the search of the airbase and I netted a couple of things for myself. The whole time he's looking for an M4 and how they are so rare in the game.

I'm smiling because the very first major building I checked (a factory) I found a badly damaged M4 on a table. At the airfield I found a magazine and some 5.56 rounds so paired everything up.

After we had searched the airfield he said that he was going to go off on his own and then I decided to take a BIG chance. I told him I had a gift and I took the now loaded M4 and put it on the ground in front of him. I told him the weapon was his and good luck in the big bad wasteland.

He thanked me over and over and I was waiting for my body to get riddled with bullets but he took it and ran off all the while thanking me and saying it was nice to have met a decent player.

After that I meandered on my own and found some more gear and such when another player came onto the TS channel I was in at TMW (Trusted Medics of the Wasteland). He asked what my play style was and as we had the same style he asked if we could join up. I said sure and after some map orienteering, we found each other and then we started hitting all the military locations for loot.

As it was a night server, a few people came and went online but we never really saw anyone. We each got some great gear and it was so much more fun with another person to run with. Obviously everything got cleared faster and we were safer as we could cover each other.

Anyway, long story short I had a blast taking a chance and running with another player (that I didn't know) and it added a great dimension to the game.
