Jarhead, what is the status of the new PC? Still in the planning stages waiting for the tax refund. Just wanted to get ideas and start researching and price checking. I do my taxes as early as possible and usually get the refund in early February. I was going to wait for the new PC before I got into iRacing, but I couldn't pass up that 1/2 off deal which expired today. I had to really tweak the settings to get decent frame rates on my old computer, but it looks at least as good as rFactor. A friend of mine went through one of the iRacing config files with me to get it setup properly. Most things are set to low with some stuff like grandstands turned off. I can live with it until I build the new PC.

By the way Jarhead, I am glad to see that you are going to build your PC. Anyone who does sim racing can build a PC. You get a better system for less money. I love my two builds.

I just did some research and decided to buy a prebuilt computer from Cyberpower PC. It is actually cheaper. Here is the build with the components Newegg prices.
Case - Cooler Master HAF 912.........................59.99 Case fans - 3x Enermax 120mm.......................29.97 CPU - AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6 core.................139.99 CPU Fan - Cooler Master V6 GT.......................49.99 Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3.........149.99 Memory - Corsair Vengeance 16GB 2x8.............89.99 GPU - AMD Radeon 7970 (Mfr unknown)..........379.99 Power Sup - Corsair 750W CMPSU-750TXV2....109.99 HDD - 1TB WD Caviar Black SATA-III 7200.......179.99 DVD - 24X Double layer DVD-RW......................19.99 OS - Windows 7 Professional 64 bit................139.99 Headset - Cooler Master Storm Sonuz..............41.99 (free with comp)
Total if all components bought separately at Newegg - $1386.86
Price at Cyberpower PC with 3 year warranty - $1309
Plus I avoid the headache of building and setting it up.
Please let me know what you think of the build.

Looks awesome Jarhead. That FX-6300 looks like the best CPU deal out there right now. I am not sure there is another CPU out there that can match its bang for the buck. Tom's Hardware ranks it high up on the list: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html I also like that GPU. Make sure you get the 3 GB version. It helps with triple screens.

I have the same motherboard runnig 32 gig of 1600 and my 6 core T1100, had ben absolutely rock solid. I also built Emceechilds comp on that same mb and GPU with 16 gig of ram and that same HDD for storage and an 840 SSD for OS. It runs amazingly fast ( almost as fast as mine) the 6300 really can get up and boogey underload. also 3 seperate 48 hr test of Prime95 couldn't even make it sweat. You'll be very satisfied and I'm uber jealous of the 7970... I sooooooooooooooo want a 3gb version of that card!!!

I have a question. I was looking at CPU options. I can get the AMD 8350 4.0 GHz 8 core 8MB cache for only $54 more than the AMD 6300 3.5 GHz 6 core 6MB cache. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Will I see a big difference in performance?

The 6300 is an awesome processor. Both overclock with a vengance. If your not going to oc..the 8350 is faster...is it 54 dollars faster? 4 to 8 fps faster + 2 more cores...in gaming. ..I dont think so. But for rendering video and graphic work..its a monster soley aimed right at the i7...and reason it on my watch list at newegg. Hits 150...it on order!

Agree with what's been said, there is not one game that will use 8 cores...not sure there is one that uses 6, High end video and image editing yes. Save the money :-) You won't even need to overclock the 6300, just use turbo mode and you'll get 4.1 gigs.

Ok guys, I have the funds and am ready to place my order for the new PC.
One last question, Windows 7 or Windows 8? They are the same price for the Professional editions, so I would like to hear if anyone is using Win 8 for their gaming PC. I heard there was an update to rFactor1 so it works with Win 8 now. How about iRacing? Does anyone hear use Windows 8 with iRacing? Is it better or worse?
Thanks again for all of your help in this new PC process.

AFAIK, rF and iRacing are fine in Windows 8. You may have to force some device drivers to install but that's typical for a new Windows release. I think, for example, the Logitech wheel software needs a workaroudn to install.
Lawyer and I will differ here but I strongly recommend Windows 7. The transition from 7 to 8 isn't significant in performance. I simply can't come to terms with the UI in 8.
I've installed 8 on my media server with the intent to force myself to adjust to it and... I hate it. Two versions of IE UIs?!?! C'mon. Hot corners to bring up options is so 1999. No Start Menu?!?! I realize that I can install add-ons to restore the Start Menu but I detest adding 3rd party UI utilities to a system that I want to be stable.
Let me state that I'm not set in my ways when it comes to OS. I love to tinker with OSes and have always been an early and/or beta adopter of each new MS OS since Windows 3.11. I run several verisions of Linux and in the past ran Mac emulators when needed. I love poking around in operating systems.
I see the value in Win8 for tablets and touchscreens but in a daily work/gaming PC, it's a layer of fluff that's unnecessary. I can do what I need in Win 8... I'm not like an old man poking at a keyboard. However, when I return to my Win 7 PC I feel relief.

Hmm...Another one of those questions that can divide folk, W7 is tried and tested and all sims work well on it, there are still some issues posted about rF1 and W8 though that tends to be plugin related.
I did upgrade my UltraBook to W8, I was not impressed with the Metro interface, not one killer app that made it indispensable and anything worth running dropped back to the more familiar desktop to run anyway.
After an update to W8 bricked my UltraBook I junked it and reverted back to W7.
So...My recommendation is stick with W7 it works, is stable, and you already know everything works and how to tweak it.
