OK. I may go back to that option and test again. My ISP was upgrading the city last year and I stopped hosting from home because my speeds and packet losses were all over the place. Things are a lot better now though I'm still waiting for the promised upload speed increase (from 5 to 10 Mbps) Yeah, I don't know how realistically feasible hosting at home really is, but it seems to do ok for now anyway.

I've split this thread from the general rF2 thread to discuss rF2 hosting.
Sean, what is your experience with other servers and stability when adding AI cars? I've tried 4 test servers and all have the AI blinking in and out and wrecking me.
#1 = internet - Amazon AWS virtual server (underpowered) #2 = internet - random unsecured server I found in the rF2 server list #3 = LAN - Intel Atom PC (a small low-powered dual-core PC I have) #4 = LAN - (the big boy) i7 920, 12 GB RAM PC
All four behave exactly the same when I enter a multiplayer session... AI blink in and out, drive off the track, sometimes reappear in my space and send me into orbit.

Seems to me the guys over at SR4L would be the guys to ask about this F1 they are hosting rF2 races with no problems.

Maybe. Sean is the only person I know adding AI to server sessions and running a rF2 server off a home connection so I'm just curious what his experiences are.

I've run them, but hadn't noticed blinking. i'll give it a try tomorrow though. I'm just getting back home from Christmas.

Just gave it a try no warping or funny stuff on my home server or on my dedicated rented box. What is your NET CONNECTION TYPE, UPSTREAM RATED KBPS and DOWNSTREAM RATED KBPS set to in your multiplayer.ini?
I would set Connection type to 4 and your upstream/downstream to 256 if not already set.

Thanks for checking. Do you mean multiplayer.ini on the client PC? I'll have to check.
On the server it is: Custom, 5000 down, 4000 up.

With 5 AI they're lagging horribly on my gaming PC even though display sub-10 ms pings. The server is running rF2 on one core (out of 4... 8 hyperthreaded) at ~3% CPU. rF2's server exe is using only 256 KB of memory. Network traffic is about 55 kbps up and 45 kbps down (at the server). I can run 10 AI just fine offline (other than the framerates dropping a bit but that's expected).

Strange. I'd probably post in the build 134 bug forum just to put it out there.

Humm... so that's what it is. Sounds like something on your PC is going crazy every 12 seconds and eating up all your bandwidth or system memory.

Yet only in rF2, weird. I had a brainstorm this AM while brusing my teeth... I had rF2 installed on another PC at home so I tried that (keyboard driving controls, yay!) and it was fine.
I think I've been chasing this problem with two unrelated pieces of information. The first server I set up was the one you reported AI cars hopping around. Every test I've done had AI issues. I'm now thinking those two things were unrelated (but similar appearing) problems.

OK. Problem solved but it still raises questions. My race rig is in a part of the house that doesn't have ethernet (but I could run it if I wanted to drill holes) so I use a USB N wi-fi adaptor. It's easily capable of 250 Mbps and has never given me trouble.
Well, I ran a long cable across the house and tried that. Problem solved. So as a semi-permanent solution I have a powerline ethernet adaptor installed near my rig and there's no lag in rF2.
I'm gonna lock this thread now and continue the discussion at ISI's forum. Thanks for your input, Sean.
