So I think it may be a bit before I join you guys in MP.
Did some testing tonight on various tracks and I'm seeing average of 30 fps with 10 AI cars on track, and the track detail set to Medium. Other settings are either low or medium for the most part.
I know that 30 is below average (40-60 fps being the norm). I've gone through the bulk of the settings for increasing the fps in the game and I'm clean booting my laptop so that is about as good as its going to get for me until I get my hands on the new gaming laptop.
Thoughts?

I'm running this game off a macbook pro, it's a 2.5ghz with a 256mb graphics card and 8gb of ram. I'm not sure my frame rates but I have lots of sections where I can see the rate dropping on screen which I think means I'm hitting high teens and twenties frequently. If you can handle it, the other cars don't seem to make as much difference as the track details. Like your son you should drop some change at memory express...

Well I am spending some moolah but not at Memory Express. A buddy is selling his one year old Asus G73/74 (can't remember exact model off the top of my head) so I'm picking that up off him which will have all the horsepower I need to run the game.
He's at Albian right now so once he's back then I should be able to get my hands on the new unit. I was just more concerned right now that my current setup would be an issue with the other players online as I don't want to mess up someone else's night because of my equipment.
Cheers!

My PC barely meets the system requirements so I have to do just what you outlined, in reducing detail level and visible cars on track. Each track is different though, so trouble with one does not blanket the whole series. I find also, that most of the stutter comes at the start, when all the cars are bunched up. Once the race gets going, and cars spread out somewhat, all is well. One other thing. Keep your texture level to "Medium". Some tracks will not work if it's any lower. At the track loading screen, your rFactor will shut down and force you to desktop if this is the case. Watch out for that.

I'd hop in during one of the practice sessions KRG and check it out first hand. As bones was saying, some tracks work better than others.

Some of should be on practicing around 6:30 Pacific. Jump in and see how it goes. One thing that will help MP framerate is to turn down special effects. Tire smoke is a framerate killer when you come up on an accident, for example.

Good tips and I will check the special effects and texture tonight. The track that gave the lowest frame rate was Brathurst in the sectors with all the walls. I was down to 26 at the lowest. I ran a single player race on the track from the demo and was 32 start to finish.
Oh off this topic but loading mods... I have seen some discussion about installing the mods to a different rFactor install (lite?) so as not to mess withe the core game. Is there a procedure written somewhere on how to do this? I looked here and on a couple of other sites but didn't really get the answer I was looking for.
Cheers!

In case you've missed the tip... adding +highprio and +fullproc to the rFactor shortcut will yield big framerate increases for some users. The shortcut will look something like: "C:\Program Files(x86)\rFactor\rFactor.exe" +fullproc +highprioAlso, I gained performance by disabling Aero when the game is running by selecting Disable Desktop Composition in the shortcut's compatibility options. While you're there, select Run As Administrator too. This game is old enough that it doesn't interact well with Windows' user-level security. As far as separate mods. You just install rFactor Lite to a new directory and then copy your licensed rFactor.exe over the one in the Lite install. Then see the Tips and Tricks thread for instructions on pointing your mods to a common Track directory. I keep a pristine rF Lite folder (that contains my customized controller settings, and modified INI files) on my hard drive that I just duplicate for each new mod rather than running the installer each time. gbr.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=downloads&action=display&thread=51

The highprio and fullproc I did already as well as running as Admin. I did forget to disable the DC though so I'll do that and see if I get a bump.
I looked and I see the rFactor Lite. Do I pay to register it again for each mod I install? Sorry for the lamo questions

Nope. Do the free download. Then delete/copy over the "new" lite ".exe" w/ your existing full ".exe".

So they all register as the same game. But if your just running one mod, you don't have to worry about it. Just install to the main game.

Excellent! Thanks for the hand holding.
So disabling DC did the trick. I'm running low 40's on the bulk of the tracks and mid 30's at Bathurst where I was getting 26's so an improvement for sure.
Now onto the next issue: The Headset! I remember why PC gaming is SO much fun! Tee Hee!

I remember why PC gaming is SO much fun! Tee Hee! Which is why none of us mind the questions. If we want racers to join we know there's a bit of help required... we all needed some help at first! It's worth the time to get it set up though!

Okies, new day and some new questions (and you all thought you were free and clear! Pffft!).
So I installed rFactor Lite, did all the tweaks etc for that install profile, then installed the V8 Unleashed Mod pointing to the lite install folder. Edited the config file to point the tracks location to the original install. Mod loads up fine and I see a number of choices like a 2010 season, 2011 season and a community edition.
So here the come: What set should I be choosing in order to run with you guys?
I tried running last night and this what I came up with. If I run the Community Edition I have no issues. My display settings stay where I set them and I can run all tracks.
If I choose either the 2010 or 2011 season, the display settings default to High and if I modify them they don't save and revert back to High. I can only run one track (Yar Marina - sp) regardless of the track I actually choose.
Sooo

Yas Marina - are you connecting to the practice server? It's the only track loaded on that. I olny put up one or two tracks at a time. If you're lhaving trouble locally, I think rF lite comes with no tracks (hence Lite) so if you installed Yas locally confirm that you're pointing to the right place.
Settings not saving - give the User account Full Access to all rF folders. rFactor doesn't understand file/directory security and as a result doesn't warn you that things don't save.
