I'm trying to help my mother-in-law get some data off an old internal HD. When I plug it in and moved the jumper to "slave", it just keeps rebooting. There are 3 settings for the jumper it appears. 1. CS (where it was at when I pulled the drive) 2. Slave 3. Master I'm just trying to get my computer to recognize it as an extra HD so I can copy the data to an external usb HD. Haven't had to do this for years, so looking for any guidance from the experts around here. Trying to stay in good graces with the Out-Laws if you know what I mean!

Ill play until Wolf comes along. If there's another IDE device on that channel them make sure your MILs drive is set to Slave and your drive is master. CS is Cable Select which just confuses things right now. In these situations (and I recover a lot of data for people) I set the drive as master and either put it in another external enclosure or as the only device on the secondary IDE line (ie where your optical drives usually sit). Of course that doesn't help you on a modern board with a single IDE channel. That means master/slave time. Its somewhat funny that as I type this I'm watching my laptop HD copy to a new HD.

Double check you bios is recognizing the drive..if you don't see it there...have it refresh the list...at that point you can play with jumper settings but i usually leave them on master, with my boot order on the drive on my normal drive. I also have an ide to USB adapter I can loan ya if ya want or you can ship the drive to me , I have both ide and sata hotswappable in my second rig. ( i too do alot of recovery for folks..lol)

Yea, if you do any sort of tech support, even the unofficial family stuff, some sort of USB dock or dongle with IDE and SATA connectors saves you a ton of time with initial troubleshooting.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I stopped by Fry's Electronics and they had a USB to SATA/IDE hard drive cable for $20. Just plugged it and works perfect! Thanks for the help. I'm running a virus scan on it as we speak!

It can be a bad thing too Craig! It was really bad when I used to live a mile from it about 10 years ago!

If I had such access here in Eugene, I would be broke from buying "must have" electronics. I love newegg, its what allowed me to build two computers last year with reasonable cost.

I love newegg, its what allowed me to build two computers last year with reasonable cost. They are the ones I used to build my system in Dec 2010 and the upgrades again this winter. The only other places I got anything from was Dell (direct) for my monitors, and Best Buy for my sound card (the mobo sound chip was dying and I "needed" one that night).

Newegg has pick up depot. Order online..pick it up. Saves shipping and time. Also they have allot of surplus/open box items discounted in the reception area...or so i'm told
