I finally got my first win in the Silverado truck today. Craig has been talking about these trucks for a while. When I first tried them, I didn't like them that much, but they grow on you. Now that I'm getting the hang of them, I'm really liking them. The last couple of weeks I have been getting some advice from a couple other friends of mine who have been on iRacing for a while and are both good oval racers. So I have been qualifying a lot better and have even had a bunch of pole position starts.
Today was the perfect storm. There were 59 people signed up for the race so there were 3 splits. My iRating put me as the number 3 driver in the second split so I didn't have to race with the aliens, but also didn't have to race with the knuckleheads. I got a good qual time last night which put me in the pole position.
I got a good start and was out front by a couple of seconds for a few laps when the first caution came out. It was too early to pit for tires and lose all that track position so I stayed out along with most of the field. Then we had a good green flag run for about 15 laps or so. I was hitting my marks and running my lines, but 2nd place was closing on me little by little. Then another caution came out somewhere around lap 20 or so. I pitted for tires along with most of the field. Having the 1st pit stall really helps because I barely made it out of the pits 1st.
2 knuckleheads stayed out on the caution though so I was starting in 3rd. Their tires were shot though and I took the lead after 1 lap of green. The guy who had been running 2nd before the caution wasn't so lucky though. He got by the 2 guys with worn tires but one of them wouldn't back off and got loose coming out of turn 2 and took out a bunch of people. We only had about 3 laps on the tires so this time I stayed out.
Once we got back to green flag racing it only lasted a few more laps and another caution. I figured out that by the time we went green again, there would be only 5 laps left so I stayed out again. Got a good start again, but so did 2nd place and he was right on me. He kept trying to run the inside line, but I could always pull away coming out of the corners. He was a good racer and never pushed it too hard or he could have easily taken us both out. I ended up holding on for the win by just over a 10th of a second.
For any of you that have iRacing, I uploaded a replay of the last 5 laps onto my dropbox. The link is below. Just place that file in your iRacing replay folder and you will be able to watch it.
