I will admit that I can't really get into NASCAR due to 3 hours of watching is just waaaaay to long for my ADD. This week though I ran two races in the rookie class on iracing and man what a rush. The first race I was involved in a huge pile up when a car in mid pack got lose and started a chain reaction.
Last night I ran my second race and went from dead last 22 to finishing in spot 10 with absolutely no penalties, wish I could do that on a road track. It was a blast, three of us were constantly battling for position and I didn't realize how much drafting really plays a part in this.
So now when I login I have to decide do I want circle track or road.

Some people think oval racing is too easy because you are only going in a circle turning left. But there is a lot more to it than that. You will have some of the closest racing and hard fought battles on the ovals. Drafting can play a big part on the longer tracks, but on the shorter tracks tire management is key. It also can be very exciting. I run the IndyCar Oval Fixed Series and it is a blast. Takes a lot of nerves though. This week at Iowa I'm doing laps in the low 18s and sometimes going into corners 3 wide. You really have to run clean lines to get through these races in one piece. Keep at it. It really gets a lot better when you get to C class and can run the NASCAR trucks.

Yea I knew that there was much more to it than just driving cirlces. But to see the difference was awesome. I ran a few laps kinda outside the pack and couldn't understand why I was so slow. Then I got in behind another car and suddenely we were haulin. Running in a huge pack was another thing that impressed me. On the road course after the first few turns you kinda get lined out. Here though holy crap its a blob race.

If Tuesday nights work for you..dont forgot. .there's Spazcar. Usually with less carnage and name calling (well that depends on lawyers mood). I tailor the mod for close bumper to bumper. .door to door action

Is that in iracing or rfactor? I have rfactor loaded but haven't really messed with it much.

Ammodawg, there is a vocal GBR minority (mainly me, Spaz and Jarhead) that prefer ovals over road racing. That is a recent development for me, and its mainly been because of Spazcar (the rFactor version, not the Forza version) and iRacing. In addition to Jarhead's points, I also would point out that ovals are easier to get into. You don't need to run 100 practice laps to do one oval race. Heck, I did less than 10 practice laps for this past Tuesday's Spazcar and I still scored a third place against tough competition. I just don't have the time or the patience to do extensive practice for every race I run. The road courses require far more practice than the ovals. I do enough so that I don't ruin someone else's race.

Completely agree with Zero on this one. If I want to be comfortable running mid pack in traffic on a road course, I need at least 100 laps or more of practice before the race. For ovals, I can usually show up, run 10 or 15 laps, and I'm ready to go. Sometimes even less if I already know the track, and it usually doesn't take long to learn an oval track. One of the hardest parts about oval racing for me is the setups. A good setup can make a big difference. That is why I usually stick to the fixed setup races on iRacing and one of the reasons I like Spazcar.
