I was watching Craig race in the Cadillac the other night and it looked like fun, so I decided to try the car out again. I hadn't driven it since the GBR hosted race at Laguna. That race was a disaster for me.
So I put the Helios tune on and ran a few laps around Mosport. Within 5 laps I was in the 1:21s and I knew there was lots of room for improvement.
Yesterday when I got home from work, I decided to put a little more effort into and see what I could do. I only had about 10 minutes before qualifying started so I signed up and went into testing mode. Without too much effort I was able to get into the mid 1:20s. Then I joined the qualify session and was able to repeat it.
After qualifying, I had about 10 minutes until race time so I signed up and did some more testing to figure out my fuel load for the race. I figured out I had way too much fuel in the car. After I dropped it down, I was able to get into the 1:19s.
Then it was race time. I was the #2 car in the second split of 13. Our split was all Cadillacs. All the KIAs were put in the first split. Only 2 of us had qualified and I was on the pole.
I got a decent start and was able to get ahead of the 1st lap mayhem. By the time I came around to start the second lap, there were already a few cars in the pits. I had one guy chasing me who was able to keep his car on the track. He was trying real hard at first and was staying within a couple of seconds. Then he went off track and fell back a bit, but didn't hurt his car. I settled into a nice race pace and was just running some decent laps.
Then I started to catch lapped traffic and it was getting a little more tense. Most of them made room and didn't fight when I went by, but there were a few that were stubborn and really made me work for it. Nobody ran me off the track though.
I had built up a 10 second lead by lap 13 and was feeling confident. Then I spun it in the tight corner before the uphill straight and almost lost the lead. When I got back on track and moving, my lead was just 1.5 seconds. I really concentrated and built it up to 3 seconds with a little help when the second place guy got loose a few times.
The last few laps I backed off just a little because I didn't want to spin it. The second place guy was really pushing it as he started to get closer. I won the race by only .362 second, but a win is a win. I want to thank my Crew Chief Helios for the tune. I'm sure I couldn't have done it without you.
I really like the Cadillac now. I think the new build really helped to make it more drivable like the Corvette. I'm going to continue to run the series. If you haven't run the Caddy lately, give it another chance. Make sure you have the Helios tune. It still can get away from you if you're not careful, but not nearly as bad as before. Very important to slow down before the corners, it still has lift off oversteer. It is best to have at least a little bit of throttle applied through the corners.
