This weekend the Cup series is at Sonoma, and of course that means that the NASCAR iRacing series is at Sonoma as well. Its a 55 lap jaunt, no full course cautions. I did 50 or 60 laps of practice this week and so I felt ready. I was in one of the middle splits, which I barely made because iRacing crashed about 15 minutes before the race!!! Anyway, I started 23rd, based purely on iRating. My mission was simply to avoid wrecks and spin outs. I was completely successful!!! 
I only had to pit once for fuel and tires around lap 35. There were lots of wrecks and spin outs but I managed to avoid all of them. I was able to advance 13 spots and finish 10th. A top 10 was more than what I could reasonably expect. What surprised me even more was how much I like driving the Cup car on a road course. It takes total concentration, particularly on throttle control, but it was very fun and rewarding. I wish iRacing would do more NASCAR road racing. For example, they should have the Nationwide car at Road America this week, just like in real life.
