Been running a few races here and there in the Star Mazda Series. I have come close, but never got a win until yesterday. It helps that it was at one of my best tracks, Watkins Glen.
I had a really good setup and ran a decent qual session which put me second on the grid. I got a good start, but 3rd place got a better start, so I came out of turn 1 in 3rd place. Had a good run through the esses and onto the back straight where the draft helped to get me along side of second place and challenging the leader. The leader moved over to block the pass and it must have upset his line into the bus stop because he went through the grass spun into the wall. This gave me the lead on lap 1.
On lap 2, the 2nd place car got a run on me on the back straight and made the pass going into the bus stop. It didn't last long though because we came up on a slow car going into the boot. The leader had to really slow down heading into the toe which allowed me to get along side on the exit and complete the pass going into the heal.
For the next 5 laps, it was a really close race with 2nd place never more than 1.5 seconds behind and sometimes as close as .3 seconds. I was able to stay up front though and then on lap 7, he pushed a little too hard going into the bus stop, went off track and hit the wall. After that, I just put it in cruise mode because the next car behind me was over 10 seconds back and losing ground every lap. I had a couple of close calls dealing with lapped traffic, but was able to keep it on the track except for a 1x while using too much curb in the bus stop.
