I have well over 500 official races this year, plus a butt load of league and hosted races and time trials. Unfortunately that is probably all I will have this year.
As for cars, the Skippy and Star Mazda are great choices. I used to hate the Skippy, but the NTM has made it a very fun car to drive now. I won races with it at Road America, Suzuka, and Watkins Glen this season. The Star Mazda is also a lot of fun, just requires a little more throttle control.
As for setups, just check the iRacing forums for any of the road cars. The road racers are very generous with their setups and you can find some very good ones. Most of my road race wins have used setups I got from the forums. Don't look for oval setups, because those guys are stingy.
I deliberately keep my road iRating low usually around 1000-1100. You can call it sandbagging, cheating, or whatever you want, but I like to have a chance of winning the races I run. I'm usually in the bottom split starting near the front of the field when I take some time to qualify. This usually allows me to stay out in front of the first lap shenanigans. If I don't qualify, I will usually start from the pits and use the race to work on SR.
As for in game chat, I normally use it, but understand why you wouldn't want to. I do have buttons mapped on my wheel to adjust the volume and also a mute button in case it gets too distracting. I also have text pass left and pass right mapped to wheel buttons for the aliens.
