The HistorX team had posted SimBin's open letter to the sim community back in August and today updated their post. In the updated post, and subsequent Facebook comments, there are two interesting bits of info: 1) there is an updated release coming out for rF1 (1.96) that addresses a couple of bugs and new textures, but no no cars. That release is "coming soon". 2) they will need to scratch build any new content for their next release. They are not sure which platform they will build their next release. They threw out AC, PCars and rF2 as possibilities. They cannot commit since all titles are still in development. They also stated that we shouldn't expect to see all of the cars included in HGT. So, at least they are still alive and planning to release more stuff, including paying attention to the current release, which was surprising to me. They are annoyed at SimBin's stance since they feel that HistorX is the sole reason why GTL still sells today (people need it to install HistorX legally). The link to their forum post is HERE

From some of the responses from one of the guys (Rantam) @ Historix on their FB posting, it sounds like Simbin is OK with Historix utilizing GTL in the manner they are (one of the very few exeptions)...primarily because it's an old sim that isn't very high on their radar (ie: not a cash cow). Keep in mind, this is only for the existing HGT&TC. Any new mods going forward would likely not be covered by this exemption. At least there is no fear of the existing HGT&TC having to underground.
But new stuff going forward is going to be ground up anyways...so it will become a moot point. But I wouldn't expect to see a "new" version of Historix (rF2 most likely) for at least 2-3 years, assuming they are able to keep manpower to continue progressing.

Yes, they did make it sound like Simbin is okay with them using it but the HistorX folks feel they have enough experience to do it from scratch. Part of the reason we wont see the same vast amount of cars is that they will be working from scratch and do not have the man power.
I forgot to mention that 1.96 will have a few physics updates but they haven't said what specifically.
I am not expecting anything soon on a new platform either. They are making it clear that they are waiting until the platform is finished or at least closer to that. Hopefully they start (or have started) the models. I assume they can build the models in 3DS Max or some other modeling application and import them.

I have a snow day today and the d/l is almost finished. Wife's streaming a movie so it's been slow. Have to go shovel now, ugh.

Yeah...I was off for a week, went back to work yesterday and snowed about 6-10 inches over night. I have no excuse not to work though because I am fully setup to work from home. Even have my damn IP phone extension on my laptop.

Does this new version, 1.96, require a completely new install?

Yes it does. The d/l is 3.25 GB. The changes are mostly updates to textures but there are new liveries and some new physics particularly the T/A cars. It says itmohe actively supports the Steam version of GTL for install.
Being that there are only two races remaining in the T/A series, we won't change to this version so keep 1.95. The install notes say to remove previous versions so I really hope it doesn't screw with old installs. We'll definitely switch after this season.

downloading now, pretty slow torrent currently snowday here also, so working from home... Thought it would be a slow day as lot of people still off for holidays. But then someone thought would be a good time to rebuild the dev database

I am so F'ing annoyed right now. I was sitting down to reinstall HistorX 1.95 on the fresh server and they pulled down the downloads from their site because of the new version. UGH!! The dedicated server isn't working from just copying it over.

It would be nice if someone with room could upload the new version. My security dose not play well with torrents.
