Try reinstalling the drivers in Win 7 compatibility mode...Or just found this steelseries.tumblr.com/post/36807496986/a-new-version-of-the-steelseries-engine-has-been Though it seems to be for the mouse so probably no use.

My best guess is that maybe 360 or similar controllers like the one I linked work natively considering Microsoft has a driver for them while others like that SteelSeries one need extra configuration. I got a Fanatec Speedster that is PC and PS3 compatible and I had soo much trouble getting that to work (it was poor quality and might have been defective so I got a refund)..
