Before last week kicked off, I was not a big fan of Daytona in iRacing. I might have even liked the road course better than the oval. Anyway, I nonetheless did a lot of oval racing at Daytona last week and I am sure glad I did. I did several A fixed Cup car races earlier in the week, with mixed results. I almost gave up by Thursday night but I stuck with it anyway and did the 50 lap Duel #1 with the NW League guys. That was tons of fun and I was fortunate enough to make it to the end and get a top 10 finish. I did a couple of more oval races at Daytona on Friday night, including a C fixed Truck race and a B fixed Nationwide car race and did well in both, including a top 5 finish in the truck. On Saturday morning, I did the Daytona 500 in the NASCAR iRacing Fixed series and got a 10th place finish, even after a serious wreck around lap 60 or so. Yes, that means 200 laps!!! I was so gratified that I made it to the end of a 3 1/2 hour race, the longest of my iRacing career. A lot of the credit goes to my awesome spotters, Troy Eddy and Anthony Palombo. They helped me recover from the wreck and keep my head in the game, even though I had to go to the bathroom and was having pain in my right shoulder. On Sunday early afternoon, I did a 50 lapper in the open C truck and got another top 10 finish. The race went green the whole way. That set me up with the right mindset for the biggest race of the week, the NW League Majors Daytona 500.
The NW League Daytona 500 rules were slightly different than the NASCAR iRacing Series Daytona 500. The main difference was that we got 2 resets in the NW League race, which changes up the strategy. Even if you get tapped for a 0x, if you pit after that, you will waste a reset. So, I had to make sure I saved my resets for serious damage. Sunday night's race started out shaky with several cautions, most likely because of inexperience and some stupid driving. But, once some of the wreckers got it out of their systems, we seemed to settle down and we had some nice green flag runs. I was involved in several serious incidents, one of which was at least partially my fault, but overall, I was able to keep my nose relatively clean and survived for 199 laps and was gratified to be there at the end. I had a nice battle with for 9th place. I got it thanks to some help from the #28, who pushed me enough to retain 9th place. I somehow managed to survive a second 200 lap, 3 1/2 hours race in the same week, without my wife threatening to divorce me!!!
