The past week I've attempted my 3rd or 4th return to iracing, I must admit the the recent updates to the game and a new wheel has made this game much more enjoyable. Iracing can be slightly overwhelming to say the least which can ruin the experience for some Unfortunately. I happened to come across this thread which I found quit informative even after being a member for 2 plus yrs. I thought i would share it as its very informative for those considering trying iracing. me.selah.ca/secrets-of-iracing/

Good advice for the uninitiated.
Seems like many GBR guys are back in iRacing recently. I'm running the Star Mazda trying to get in a whole season for the first time.

I was thinking about doing that series as well but decided to go back to the basics and work my way up the ladder. Iam currently doing the advanced mazda cup, skippy and ford spec racer. Asides from one bad racer where a back lapper decided to race me and ended up taking me out I've tallied a win and 4 podiums in 6 races tho I need to find alot speed to battle the top division guys. My last adventure in iracing I decided not to care about sr and irating and just drive.....Needless to say I dropped 1500 irating and was lowered to division 7 lol For know Iam just relearning the cars, working on technic and enjoying the leagues as I get comfortable I'll attempt to push them.

I am doing the same series as the last few seasons, Global Challenge with the Cadillac, Class C Fixed with the truck, Class B fixed with the Nationwide Ford Mustang and the Class A Fixed with the Chevy Gen6. I do need to remember to qualify for the Global Challenge, the races are wreckfests on the first lap and many of the lower level guys do not understand what a blue flag is. Yesterday I had a race where I got 16 incident points. It takes 17 to get disqualified. Yes, part of it was my frustration with lappers not letting me pass, but part of it was their blocking, even though they were laps down!!!

I just run for fun. Going to run another season of V8SC. And feeling the itch for touring cars, so I'll probably give the Kia (in Global Challenge) a go. Surprisingly a fun car to drive. And I'll probably pick up some GT3 races here and there in the FGT GT3.

The RUF Cup (C-spec car) series looks like fun. The car is super easy to drive, especially since it's got a TPMS dispay on the dash. Wait a couple of laps for the tires to get to 1.8-1.9 bar then drop the hammer. That may be my secondary race series.

The Ruf is in my cart as we speak. That will be my next car.
FYI, check your inboxes. I just received the $100 for $75 or $25 for $20 coupons.

Yeah, I saw the bonus credits promotion is going. I plan to buy myself one last Christmas present and get the $100 in credits for $75. That should carry me through all of 2015, including a membership renewal when they next have the $49 special. My current membership expires in September 2015.

I forgot to mention that the Star Mazda is testing out a new Quali format this season. There are no separate Q sessions. Quali takes place at the beginning of every race session. IMO it is a step in the right direction but it is a tad long. A 15 minute quali starts right away. After that there is a 5 minute practice session, followed by the race. Quali is not private so you need to find a slot in the traffic. Some are complaining of the length while other complain that they have to navigate slow traffic. It definitely is a new experience.

I haven't done a Star Mazda race yet, but I was reading about the new qual procedures and I like the direction they are going in. I think it would be better to have a 5 minute warmup to allow everyone to get in the session, followed by a 10 minute qual session, then race. Basically the same way hosted sessions are done. The question of solo or group qual sessions is a little tricky. For a shorter qual session, I think solo would be an ok idea so everyone has a good chance to have a clean track and complete a lap. But most people want the most realistic format which is group qual, the same way almost all real road racing is done.

I like realistic procedures but I think solo is the way to go with iR, only because a couple of guys that know each other can team up and draft each other, leaving the other guys on their own.
