Is anyone else here planning to race in the iRacing Indy 500? I am planning to. If you want to find out more about it, here is the official iRacing thread: members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/3314329.pageThis year I made my own racing setup. I think it is ok, at least it works for me. I did an official IndyCar Series Open Oval race at Indianapolis yesterday and finished 3rd of 17 with my setup. For my qual setup, I downloaded it from the iRacing forums in the IndyCar section. Qual setups are completely different than race setups and don't make sense when you build them. They are also only good for a few laps and can't be converted into race setups. Here are the setups, check the notes for adjustments in the race setup. For the qual setup, put the Weight Jacker at 6 and go. If you need explanation on the adjustments let me know. 2015 Indy 500 Q V1.sto (3.04 KB) 2015 Indy 500 R V5.sto (3.35 KB)

Thanks Troy. If my wife is away visiting her parents, I may do this.

Oh, I just noticed this is being run under Oval licenses? I will pass. My low oval iR is going to place me in a split with idiots. It's not worth three hours of aggravation.

For this race only, splits are determined by qualifying time regardless of iRating or License level. The only way you will be gridded by iRating is if you do not set a qualifying time. Then you will be placed in the splits behind everyone who did qualify and gridded by iRating.

I did the race Friday and Saturday night. Friday was a wreck fest. I started on the pole in the 4th split, but it went downhill from there. There were a lot of cautions early and I wanted to keep fresh tires, so I pitted for most of them. This put me way back in the pack behind slower drivers. On lap 39, I attempted to pass low going into T1, but the other guy wasn't expecting it and came down into me. I took responsibility because it was a little aggressive so early in the race. That ended both of our races.
I had a much better race Saturday night than the mess I made Friday.
Less people signed up on Saturday so I ended up in the 2nd split starting 24th on the grid. I was very conservative for the first 150 laps. I pitted almost on every yellow to keep the tires fresh and we also had a couple of good green flag runs. With attrition and having a more stable race setup than most of the others in the race, I kept working my way through the pack. I even led a couple of laps near the end because I was the last one to pit for fuel and tires on our last green flag stop.
After the final pit stops for fuel I came out in 8th place. With fresh tires and just over a half tank of fuel, my car was flying. I worked my way up to 4th with some good passes and was closing in on 3rd. I don't think I could have caught 1st and 2nd as they were too far ahead. Then a caution came out on lap 193. I only had 11 green flag laps on my tires so I didn't pit, but most others didn't pit either. When the green flag came out we had 4 laps to go and I'm sure I could have got by 3rd and probably challenged for the lead, but never got the chance. We had another caution before we got to T2 and finished under yellow.
I will take it though. It was a good race. Started 24th, finished 4th with zero incidents and never touched a wall or other car. I didn't have the fastest setup in the race, but mine was definitely one of the most stable for a full fuel run. I had plenty of cars run away from me on fresh tires only to have me catch up and pass them after 15-20 laps when their tires wore out. I did a lot of testing on my race setup to get it stable for the long runs and it paid off.

Comgrats Troy, if I had the time I would liked to run the 500. I recently started running the Indy oval fixed series and I'm really enjoying it. I even I had my first oval win with DW. I just got my oval B license and I'm thinking about running the open series next season.

Well done, Troy. These things are so dependent on the quality of the split, it seems.

It has been my favorite series since joining iRacing. I see you ran 45 races last season, I guess you really do enjoy it. Congrats on getting your first oval win. I'm sure you will get plenty more. Qualifying can really make or break your race. The further towards the front you start, the less chance of running into someone else's accident. If you would like, I could start posting some videos and explain how to get around some of the tracks. I am good at any track 1 1/2 miles and longer. Most weeks, I am in the top 10 for qual and have many top 5s. I'm not so good at the short tracks like Milwaukee and New Hampshire. There are 2 adjustments you can make in the fixed oval setups and they really do make a difference. For the tracks of 1 1/2 miles and longer, set the pinion gear to 6. This will give you more precise steering and will make the car less twitchy. The other setting you can adjust is the steering offset. This setting will allow you to have your steering wheel centered when going down the straights. Before they had this setting, you would have to turn your wheel to the right to go straight.

Yeah I've been running alot of races. Driving 200+ mph around an oval with 20 other cars is very exhilarating..lol!! Posting videos would be appreciated and thank you for that. Question....what's your setting on your wheel for rotation? And do you use your F1 wheel or GT rim? I've been using my f1 rim but it feels very twitchy.

I am amazed at how well you guys drive the IndyCar. I have tried many times now, over the last couple of years, but I just cannot drive that car in iRacing or rFactor 2. It is driveable in Forza 5! LOL!
For whatever reason, the NASCAR truck and Xfinity and Cup cars are much more driveable and fun for me and so I will stick with them for ovals.
