Due to some new interest, we'll try kicking off a few sessions on off weeks from Jimmy's GTO series. Races will be randomly generated cars & tracks utilizing free content (for now). I may generate a spreadsheet to identify who leases what content to add paid cars into the mix...but only if it's content that everyone already has. These one-off events will not require any purchased cars or tracks. Any given car or track will not be run more than once in a 3 race period. Due to the inability for race restarts and the requirement to pay for every race session, rather than running actual races we'll just run the first few weeks in 2 hour practice sessions. The first hour will be open practice, then the second hour we will grid up for mock races (3-5 laps) to allow people to acclimate to the sim. We'll close out the final 10 minutes with a race session. 6:00pm PST - Session live for open practice 7:00pm PST - Mock races begin 7:40pm PST - 5 minute open qually 7:45pm PST - 10 minute race session to close out the evening Races will be located in the Hosted sessions for now. Password for the server will be the standard GBR race server password. Week 1 looks to be a bit of a hair raiser. Date: Jan 30th Car: Cadillac CTS-V.R Track: Lime Rock - Full Course

Should be fun. Maybe Some old members who only use iracing will join. When is the first week?

Won't make this one, don't have the sim yet.

Nice. I should be able to make it this Wednesday.
I haven't picked up any paid content yet but I don't mind picking up a couple of cars/tracks if needed.

No worries Dan. We're going to try to do this for a few weeks, as long as there is a continued interest.

Session scheduled for Wed. If I didn't bugger it up. If the combo proves too much for some, we'll throw another one up on the fly.

Cadillac... oh my, Dan's in for a steep learning curve! Probably not though... it's just like an underpowered V8 Supercar. We all know how to drive those, no?

Depends on if I get it set up in time. Downloading updates and it's really slow for some reason. I'll jump on in the morning and try to get my wheel set up, but looks like there is a lot to learn about the paint system and set ups.

I’ll be there. I did a couple of laps the other night to make sure I had everything updated. Should be fun.

I'll jump on in the morning and try to get my wheel set up, but looks like there is a lot to learn about the paint system and set ups. All cars have base setups to get you started. Painting is a bit different than you're used to. Because iRacing is a closed system with everything hosted on their servers you're technically limited to their painting system (which is like a dumbed down template/colour tool) and sponsors. However, there's a 3rd party add-on called Trading Paints that downloads and shares custom paints. iRacing lets it co-exist because it keeps them from getting sued for trademark infringement. If you install a custom paint only you will see it and if you upload that to TP then only people in your session running TP will see it.

So that was a good time on Wednesday. It was a pretty casual session--it almost had an HPDE atmosphere at times, which I thought was nice to get accustomed to.
I've had an iRacing subscription for over a year and that was actually the first time I've been on track with anyone else. Until the other night I'd just been running laps in a test and reviewing telemetry in VRS.
One thing that I was surprised at in iRacing is that there doesn't seem to be a live tire temperature display in car? Is that right? The grip level seemed to fall off a cliff, it would have been helpful to see tire temps to help get a feel for where the limits were (and how long it takes to recover).
Also, is there a separate iRacing chat channel? I've noticed some controls in the shortcut screens and thought I caught someone referring to it last night.

- There is no live tire temp display except for one or two cars that have that IRL. iRacing has been criticized for tire grip that's too sensitive to temperature. I don't know how realistic it really is but tire management is pretty critical. You'll also find cold tracks are much quicker than warm. Now that iRacing has time-of-day and dynamic skies it means grip can change a lot during longer sessions.
- In a car like the Cadillac you have to run several laps then pit and check the temps in the tuning menu. That's supposed to simulate your pit crew measuring it.
- iRacing has built-in chat but the audio quality is crap. TeamSpeak is much better so we prefer it for team chat during official sessions and use iRacing chat just to talk to other iRacers.

Dale about covers it but since you and Dan are new you may want to map a push to talk button and, more importantly, a mute button to silence the chit chat BS if you ever run an official race.
After the event the two new guys setup teamspeak so we won't need to use the iracing chat. Dale's not kidding that the sound quality is crap.
I think the next event will result in closer racing since the mx5s are a bit easier to keep on track. I had a lot of fun and comparing it to an HPDE event is a good one, except with a lower repair bill!

From what I've read on some reddit threads some of the reasoning has to do with live tire temps being a way to cheat with the right software. When there's as much price money on the line as there is in iRacing, I guess that makes sense. As an alternative, what might be nice would be if you could at least map a button that let you request tire temps at intervals from your spotter. Most of my time before in iRacing so far has been spent in other cars, and I guess the Caddie is just be more prone to cooking the tires than others.
I'll look into setting up a PTT and muting once I start getting more into official races. That's a good idea. I don't mind the chatter with this group, but after watching a couple of live races on Twitch, I could see how racing with a bunch of whining randos could get old. Got any other tips? (Especially for using a Rift?)
I've got more time in the MX5s, so next time should get a little more exciting. HPDE cost is no joke, though. I think I spent enough in track insurance and an inspection the last time I did one to pay for a couple years of iRacing and a little bit of content. Gone Broke Racing > Gone Broke HPDE'ing
