Hey all my mate has scored a secondhand computer and he wants to set it up for playing rFactor. now it runs XP, for him to use XP is it the same basic setup as running W7 as in folders etc as i will have to talk him through it (we live 5000ks apart im east hes west lol) and all ive used for rFactor is Windows 7. now ive said to him to get atleast a GTX560 for graphics i think it will be good enough for a single screen (but me & him will discuss it more) as he wants to keep it as cheap as possible. ive just got to try and make it as painless as possible lol he gets frutrated easily lol
many thanks fellas

I use Windows XP and rFactor runs fine with it. I have an nVidia 9800 1GB graphics card and I'm able to turn everything on high using a single screen at 1176 x 668 resolution.

I was going to say 560 is overkill if your mates on a budget, I second Jarheads recommendation for the 9800, great card and still capable of running games like Crysis at decent settings.

ok cool fellas thanks he's not really on a budget (hes millionare lol) just he basically wants try before he commits lol as we met playing V8s2 on PS2 online about 8yrs ago & been best mates since. so this is him just putting his toes in the pool. thanks jarhead but i shoulda guessed it was easy as it was so simple to move from one ssd to the other. so i think it has a GTX295? at moment.

Yup 295, thought so, that should run rF 1 no problem no need to upgrade that at Just walk him through the install and he should be fine, I'm sure give he is not short of a few bob that was a fairly top of the range PC not so long ago.

No problem..if he needs help on setting or installing...send him to my tutorials. They won't differ much on XP. I can also put an XP one together for him if he needs. I've got every os back to 95

more then adequate smokey with that card Yeah, the 295 should run rF1 at around 300 fps single screen. On the less detailed tracks, framerates will be in the 400s or higher. Triple display racing will be 90-150 fps with Multiview enabled and careful selection of graphics settings. I had dual GTX 275s which is about the equivalent to the 295.

on a side note i always run v-sync as it shits me when i see tearing now it done it with the GTX550tis x2 & does it with the GTX670oc... is there a way to stop this without v-sync or adaptive v-sync?

Just warn him it's the deep end of the pool he's dabbling with. He's likely to fall in and get wet! ;D

lol i will helios me & chop have always loved racing games (we met online in PS2) when i had nights off we would do 8hrs+ on V8sc2/3 etc. when ps3 came out we went to shooters as it was pretty friggin sparse on the ps3 front for racing all we wanted was a pretty version of V8sc/Toca. GT5 is fun but it doesnt have what (I) want V8s but im thinking he might fall into the pool once he tries this as its not as pretty as GT5 but it is our Pretty V8sc/Toca that we have wanted since launch of PS3. i just wish it hadnt taken me so long to find it

Ok so got my mate the SSD with the games on it. the first night he got it did not go well... as i knew it would lol as he is not a patient man (with this sort of stuff) straight up he had to buy it online went down well when i bought it it was on special as i paid 20bucks or so he had to pay 40 lol but thems the breaks. next up was trying to setup up TS... that went well (sarcasm) so it took a while. once that was done well we decided to start a room (me hosting) well just getting through to the join section was painful enough haha so when we got there & he could not see my room that was really going to the limits of his patience. the night basically ended there. now i jumped on here annoyed F1 & Hawks of my dilemma. they pointed me in the right direction that i need to port forward etc it took quite a few posts but i got there in the end. so tonight we jump on again he had settled down so we spent a good deal of the night setting up the wheel, buttons etc etc took a bit but we got there he was surprisingly calm & patient tonight lol so all went good. long story short his grapics card is an ATI 500 series so its not real good and his TV is a 1366x768 and the graphics looked a bit dodgy he reckons. so what we did was run his PC at 1920x1080 and he really liked the grapics then so hes going to buy a new 1920x1080 tv and run that as he was getting a headache at lower rez. but he loves V8s so im happy ill have someone to practice my tracks with for our series so im hopin to be faster next series as ill practice alot with him on me nights off.
ya have to remember to this is all by phone this setting up as he lives 5000ks away from me. also another thing he kept dissconecting from me but i think it was because he had DX7 in his config originally and i remember F1 saay it can cause disconnections one time so hopefully that will fix it
