You can always start from the pits to get a sense of the racing while avoiding mayhem. Don't grid, then click "Missed Start". You'll get a 8 second delay before you can roll off.
Also I found Rookie Oval racing to be much cleaner after 10 PM PDT. I was racing mostly with Aussies at midnight and 1 AM... all the kiddies had gone to bed.

Another way to test the waters is to use the spectate feature. While in that mode you can drive your car but you're invisible to the racers. I'll wait for a fast guy to catch me, follow his lines then if I lose touch with him, wait for the next guy and so on...

Nor me...just played with the Mazda on the test track, got to say my wheel and pedals feel great and the FF is the best I have felt right out the box. Miss the bonnet view though, I hate looking through a letter box and it feels odd looking at a wheel over my wheel. But it does feel a real quality product, shame about the pricing model. If rFactor two feels like this, I will be one happy bunny.

It may help to adjust your field of view with [ and ] I don't find the MX-5s particularly hard to see out of but yea... if you're used to hood cam it's going to take some adjustment.

Yes I did that, but still...I was looking at the view out of my road car today, well I do that every day LOL and for me what I see is far more akin to bonnet view than a game in car, it's horses for courses of course but I just find it more "real" Maybe when I finally get my three screen set up it may make a difference. Yes the Mazda view is not too bad but there is still a lot of wasted screen real estate...heh just one of my personal preferences.
