As most of you know I have a new PC. I transferred over some settings files like plugins and the config, and took the whole "zed architect" folder that contains my PLR and such.
It was crashing every time I tried to load a track under my transferred PLR.
I know it's a shot int he dark but do any of you know what can and cannot be transferred over from the old PC?
I did install the base game and V8 fresh. I am just looking to save time by transferring settings. Thanks.

My understanding is that you should be able to just copy everything over lock, stock and barrel without having to reinstall anything.

Hmmm...I wonder if it has to do with coming from a 32 bit to a 64 bit Windows in that the program files folder has (x86) appended to it. Would certainly affect certain mappings like my locations folder.

You should be OK copying your PLR folder. I move mine around all the time. 32 bit vs 64 bit shouldn't matter. Mappings are controlled by the config.ini file and IIRC all the paths in there are relative.
1) The one thing that might be biting you is that rFactor doesn't understand user permissions... you may want to give full privleges on the entire rFactor directory tree your user accounts (I think I did my login and Everyone).
2) Ensure your new PC's user account has proper permisssions on the copied PLR folder. If it came from another NTFS drive it could have come in with incorrect security settings.
3) Something else you can try is to delete (well move to a safe place) that profile folder, create a new basic one in the game with your name, confirm it works then copy just the old PLR file into that. If it crashes then search the PLR file for any hard-coded file paths. If it works then copy in your Controller directory and anything else that you've customized.

Thanks, Dale. I will give it a go. When you get a chance can you tell me the path you use for your locations? I know mine is a hard path and I forget how to make it relative (go back one level).
I will tell you that I am a bit of a noob in Win7. I was struggling with permissions even though I am using an admin user account. When I tried to change permissions for only the rF folders the permissions were grayed out. It must be inheriting from the parent "program files" directory.
It was getting late so i will look at it with a set of fresh eyes tonight.

You may potentially avoid permission problems by not installing to Program Files. Mine is installed to a separate folder in the root of the drive.... C:\rFactor
My location folder is the only thing in config.ini that isn't relative. I just entered the full path for those.
Moving up a directory is usually accomplished with ".." but I don't know if rFactor would recognize something like this: ..\GBR_Tracks\
One other thing... are you installing the digital download version of rF or from DVD? The former has some quirks I believe with some files going into Documents so Helios or one of the others with that version may be better able to advise. My install is from DVD so it's a bit different.

I am installing from DVD. I think I'll try getting it out of the Program Files directory as well. Thanks again.

Glad you posted this Zed. I will be getting a new PC soon and this is good information to know. Seeing all the problems you have, I will be just doing a complete fresh install and setting everything up manually. I do it all the time when installing new mods, so it won't really be a big deal for me. Thanx F1 for the tip about installing to the root directory.
I'm not quite a PC noob, I started building and upgrading PCs in the late 90s. I really haven't messed with it for a while though and I have no experience at all with Windows 7, so I will have a bit to learn. I would say right now I know just enough to be dangerous with a PC. I know how to really mess it up, but not enough to troubleshoot and fix any major problems.
I was planning to build my next PC until I found out I could have Cyberpower PC build it for less than what the parts would cost me. Plus it will be all setup with a 3 year warranty.

Don't know if this will help Zed. But when I transferred over to my server, I had the same problem. All I did was right click on the rFactor.exe and checked the box for run as admin under the compatibility tab. And I did the same with the shortcut. It ran no problem after that.
Weather it will work for you or not, I can't say. But it's easy, and wont hurt to try.

^ yeah that too. It doesn't matter for me what it's set to, but it's worth a try since it's a very quick thing to try.

Thanks all. I will be at it again tonight so I will post up the resolution. I was rushing and tired...this time I'll test at each step to see where I screwed it up.
@jarhead - building it was a lot of fun and a piece of cake. I haven't done it since college and I missed it. That was before the interwebs and the info you can get. I think the main benefit is if you build it you have an intimate knowledge that may help fix it down the line.
The warranty is nice. My mobo, cpu, and hdd all have 3-year warranties too...just not as a whole.
