It's an expensive hobby but just tell the wife it's not like you're out on a boat or golf course all day. She knows exactly where you are This is what keeps my wife quiet about my gaming purchases. Plus the fact that she loves shopping for clothes, shoes, and purses. I will be looking at getting a new computer and triple screen setup probably next year when we switch to rFactor 2.

Plus the fact that she loves shopping for clothes, shoes, and purses. I will be looking at getting a new computer and triple screen setup probably next year when we switch to rFactor 2. The truth is that my wife does not mind the expense of the hobby. She actually has been very supportive of Operation Triple Screen. She thinks my desk looks much better now with the three screens, rather than the single screen and aquarium I had before. What pisses her off is me getting home from work at 6pm, and then jumping into a race at 6:30pm. My goal the last week or so has been to get home by 5:30pm or so, and not jump on my computer until 7pm PST at the earliest (rFactor and GT5 nights, for example), and preferably 7:30pm or 8pm PST. By then she is tired of me anyway and is getting the kids ready for bed.

I PVR a whole bunch of trashy TV shows that the g/f likes. Then when it's race time I hand her the remote. Problem solved. It helps that she's obsessive about watching series... I think Season 2 of Downton Abbey got me two whole nights of racing.

I think Season 2 of Downton Abbey got me two whole nights of racing. I get the extended cable package so that my wife can watch Bravo, which has a lot of the trash shows that she loves to watch (i.e. - Housewives, hoarders, etc.) That buys me a ton of happiness after 8pm.

I have the perfect setup. I work Tue-Sat 7am-3:30pm. My wife works Tue-Sat 5pm-1:30am. I get home around 3:50 and my wife usually leaves for work around 4:00 to 4:10. Then its playtime until I feel like going to bed.
Sunday and Monday are husband/wife time, but she can't handle me for 2 whole days so I usually get some play time in on those days, but I can't really plan for it. Sometimes she needs (wants) for me to take her somewhere (shopping, out to eat).

I live near a small lake suitable for boating, swimming etc. There are a lot of nice boats, jet skis even a couple small floatplanes on it during summer. In the winter once it freezes over there are one hell of a lot of quads and snowmobiles. None of the above gear is cheap, 'especially' when purchased new. And snowmobiles in this area really have maybe 6 weeks max in which they can be used, the boats and jet skis maybe 5 months. So looking around at all this I can't feel I am really spending all that much on my hobby. In the end I figure it is all relative, depends on your situation and how much enjoyment you get out it...

OK, here is an update on Operation Triple Screen. Last night, I was able to get my Nvidia Surround to run my triple screens at 5760 X 1080. As you guys pointed out earlier this week, I likely had a problem due to different sync polarities at 1920 X 1080, and thus Nvidia Surround was only giving me the option of 3840 X 1024 (due to each display likely have the same sync polarities at 1280 X 1024). So, on Thursday night, I played with the "Custom Resolution" options for my Insignia HDTV using Nvidia Surround. In particular, I created a custom resolution for the Insignia at 1920 X 1080, 59 hz and +/+ sync polarity. That must have done the trick, since when I turned my system on last night, Nvidia Surround gave me the option to run triple screens in 5760 X 1080. I played some iRacing last night and was able to run it at 5760 X 1080, with everything maxed out. It looks amazing.
Also, before I figured out the Nvidia Surround tweak, I played with my Eyefinity set up on my desktop PC. I was able to run iRacing at 5040 X 1050, with the eye candy turned down. Keep in mind I only have one GPU on that system, my 6870, and a slower CPU. I have read that iRacing relies heavily on the CPU. I am probably getting much better performance with my gaming PC due to the 560tis in SLI, and because I have the Core i5 2500K in the gaming PC.
Good news all around!!! The budget for Operation Triple Screen at this point totals $150, and I have some back up in case my gaming PC goes down.

"eye racing". LOL.
Glad to hear it's working. I've learned some stuff via your experience too.

The moral of the story for me is if you want to use Nvidia Surround for your triple screen set up, save yourself the hassle and run identical screens. If you want to use different screens, and only run via one GPU, get a high end AMD card, such as the recently released 7970 that Dark is going to run in his gaming PC.

Yeah, I went with identical monitors just to avoid problems then got all excited and forgot that reasoning when I upgraded the centre monitor. Lucky for me the sync matched.

Yeah, you lucked out, although as I found out, Nvidia Surround does allow you to tinker with the sync polarities so that you can match the displays up at the highest resolution, if necessary. Its hit or miss, and I just lucked out on finding the right match - +/+.

A lot of good info here. I am reading all these threads about building PCs, setting up triple screens and gathering information because I plan to get a new PC with triple screen setup next year. My old PC runs rFactor fine and it looks ok on my 60" tv, but I'm only running it at 1180x668. The tv is old and only 720P, but I had to resize the desktop to make it fit on the tv and that is the resolution I ended up with.

One of these days I'll put down the wheel, controllers, guitars & wrenches long enough to continue diagnosing....
