First of all congratulations to Craig and Kelly. Awesome finishes for both of you. Just finishing a race like that is a huge accomplishment.
As for splits, iRatings and qual times, almost all official races are split the same way which is by iRating. A few races each year are split by qual times, usually only world tour and special events. The number of splits is determined by the number of iRacers signed up. You can tell the maximum size of a split by checking the sessions screen. Whatever the maximum size of a practice room is will be the maximum size of each split. At the end of the race, you can find out what split you were in by hovering your mouse over the red R|Splits icon on the results screen. This will show the number of splits and your split will have a star next to it.
Within each split, your car number is always assigned by iRating with the highest iRating driver having car #1. The grid is set first by qual times with everyone who qualified gridded in order of qual time in front of drivers who didn't qualify. Those who don't qualify will be gridded at the back in iRating order. In multicar races, each type of car will be gridded together, for example in the Grand Am Sports car series, all Riley DPs will be gridded in front of the McLarens even if the Riley DP driver didn't qualify.

I won a prize again guys, this time a Tamiya model of the 1968 McLaren M8A!!! LOL! This should be a lot of fun to assemble and paint with my kids. As some of you may recall, I also won a prize, a Thrustmaster THR8S shifter, for finishing incident free in the Inside Sim Racing at the Rock truck race a year or so ago. I guess it is sometimes better to be lucky, than good.

I am still fazed that I was able to finish that race with no incidents, let alone get first in my split. I had the wheel issue at the beginning of the race that caused me to go almost a lap down from the get go. Moreover, the split was dirty, I was the only one of approximately 40 drivers to go incident-free. And, it took more than two hours.
As you guys know, I much prefer ovals over road racing. The Caddy, however, is a huge exception to that rule. For whatever reason, that car just works for me. I also love driving the Star Mazda.
