I realize there is a tune & setup forum but I am posting a discussion and not an actual tune. Mods please move if you see fit.
I understand the basics of setting up a car from FM but I was wondering if any of you have a guide of sorts. For example, do you have a list of temperature to try to achieve? What is the optimal tire, brake, water, oil, temperature? Last night I started practicing Vanport and my front right seemed WAY too hot. Not sure what range I should maintain and what I could do to maintain it! Thanks, gents.

Generally I try to keep the fronts within 20 degrees of each other, but it don't work on all tracks. Dropping pressure and spring helps some, but it's all trial and error.

I am still working on this myself. Right now I'm grateful for the sharing of tunes as it lets me dissect them and then tweak them to see what changes happen so I can tune for my driving. I know one thing though and that is loose tunes do NOT work for me in this game. wow... might as well be piloting a hovercraft!
Cheers!

Yeah, I need to ask more people for tunes so i can compare them and learn from it. The following link is actually pretty decent at explaining tuning to a degree. I knew a lot of it but picked up a few things. I'll post others if i come across anything else. needlesslyobscure.wordpress.com/motorsports-setup/

I got nothing useful to add for this series. I started long ago with a tune of Tony's and since then it's sort of evolved. All I really play with is camber (IRL, these cars use a ton of camber), front tire pressure, rear ARB and final gearing.

do you adjust the camber by feel or do you go by the tire temperature? I had someone's tune and it felt OK but I had a 40 degree spread between the inside and outside of the left-front tire on PIR. It had a camber of 5.5 and I have dropped it to 4.2 to get the spread closer to 10 degrees. The tire still gets too hot in general but I am not sure how to reduce it. KRG mentioned spring so i may mess with that.

I do know that dropping the rear trackbar from the default tends to yield good results from the tunes I have received. The camber settings don't seem to change much between the tracks. I have seen one or two tunes where the springs were adjusted independently to reduce the extreme heat and wear on on particular tire.
I tried that but my results were less than stellar. I have also attempted to apply some real world tuning to the cars and again have had mixed results. Many of the settings are very fine and you will notice changes instantly if you make large adjustments on any one component.
The learning continues.

I should pay more attention to the temperatures. I mean, I qualified 2nd tonight but after 7-8 laps on the softs I was skating around like crazy.

Sounds like you need to adjust your tunes for the race. You already know how to make a good qualifying tune, but you're finding out that may not be a good race tune, especially for the longer races. Need to be a little less aggressive and soften it up a bit. Might not handle quite as good at first, but later in the race you will still have some tires left. @helios. Great resource. I have seen those tips before, but not all together on one neat page like that. If you don't mind, I'm going to put that on a spreadsheet to make it easier to print out and read on a black and white printer.

@f1, I hope you realize I wasn't knocking the tune (in case it was derived from yours). I was just concerned that common practice is to have the 10 degree C spread. I can only assume your mid race issues were somehow tied to the temperature. I have no idea how hot is too hot. I thought red on the HUD meant too hot but I just looked at the rF manual and it means the tire is at race temperature. I guess more tinkering will help clear that up.
@helios, thanks for the info. I too have seen lists like that but that is nice and concise.

In both races I was pushing pretty hard to try and keep close to Fantomas... that ate up the tires a lot harder than in practice. My best clean lap of this entire week was during the race.

Found this very helpful article about tire pressure. Page 3 has info about how to change tire pressure so the inside/middle/outside tire temps are very close. TurnFast!
