Hi all ive ordered a 256 SSD and was wanting to move all games & non essential stuff from C: drive. im doing this as to free up space on 120GB SSD C: drive. plus i want to be able to run more games. but what is the easiest way to move games? is it just a simple copy & paste (im doubting) or would they need reinstalling on that drive?
thanks smokey

Generally anything you actually install (programs, games, etc) will have hooks into the windows operating system and file structure so just simply moving files somewhere will usually break your program/game.
Best to back up the data portion (in this case, profiles, tracks, config files, etc) and then re-install the program/game.
Hope that helps.
Cheers!

If your going to try to move a game by copy and paste, Do as Kelly said and back up the files you need, just in case you have to reinstall.
When you copy the game over, make sure the file path is as close as possible to the original. ex: If it is like this C:/Program Files/rFactor and you put it on a new drive, say E for example. Make sure the file paths on (E) are the same. ex: E:/Program Files/rFactor. Then change the (C) to (E) in the short cut properties for Target and Start in. Windows will connect it to the original HKEY sometimes by doing it this way. Not always. If it works, you'll save some time, If not, DELETE the new files and install as before.

rFactor doesn't care if you move its folder. config.ini uses relative, not absolute, paths if you haven't changed anything.
I've moved rFactor folders between drives, PCs and FTP'd them to hosted servers. Zero problems other than updating shortcuts. Use "Move" verify the new install works then delete the old one.
Other sims may not be so easy and most applications will not like being moved.

I'll be doing the same smokey...just got word i got accepted into the Samsung SSD Driver program...(more on that as they tell me...) but i do know my 256gig 830 supposed here by next week. Biggest thing like they said above. Paste to a like/same folder as your original drive the edit the short cut icon to find it, prefferibly just change the drive letter.

I <3 SSDs. Part of the reason I like them is they're so durable. I had a 80 GB and a 120 GB sitting loose in my PC case for over a year without issues I had yesterday off work and finally got around to mounting them properly (needed special screws because my case's drive cages are a little strange).

Wow, I'm surprised that rFactor doesn't install anything into the windows file structure seeing as it does install/update Active X if required.
Interesting.

Yeah, it makes moving it around incredibly easy. I wouldn't be surprised if you could copy it to a USB stick and run on another PC.
rFactor may well be trying to install DirectX DLLs but I suspect that either/or:
- they are always in a known OS-defined location like %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 - our versions of DirectX are always newer than what rF tries to install so the rF installer just skips over that (rF1 was written for what, Windows XP?)
rF will always check its root directory for substitute files as well (GID's d3d9.dll for example).

With the video editing...storage of completed videos...raw captured footage....graphical templates, personal music and creative music and associated video editing progs...I'm currently using 8 Tb worth of drives. One 2 Tb is a"onboard"backup. .oh wait actually 10 Tb cause i have a spare 2 Tb backup that sits unconnected and is manually backed up monthly. So until 1 Tb ssd get cheap...i have a long relationship withlarge capacity hhd's in my future. Hence the reasonI'm always snagging them wheni can. Between 4computers in my house...got a total of 15 Tb in action...+/_ 2 Tb..lol
