Thatss a back up at this point you can a dyi system that 5x better at tiger direct for 199 That system uses integrated graphics. We cannot recommend integrated graphics, Spaz, even for the "bare bones" system. Its just not right.

no your right...add a 50 graphic card and your set.. for barebones.. a barebones PC to run the cirrent version of r rfactor and some other older mods shouldntt be more then like 400...a mid line upgradable as money becomes available starts round 600...just my experience... I build this stuff all the time for folks. Just put together a system for my ex son in law that cranks out wow and bf3 for 650 and he can easily juice it up later when prices fall again. Sorry.. just not in agreement with the current direction of bare and mid line systems. What you have posted is all good and powerful...but you can get more bang for your buck depending on what you're willing to settle for or plan for ,in my opinion

Spaz, when you say you're not in agreement, you mean an adequate system can be had for less, correct?

yes..adequate barebones or midline...don't get me wrong everything that has been posted IS excellent and will work great...Just if your seriously on a budget or only wanting to spend as little as possible, a barebones system can be done for less...that you can later pass on to someone els or keep as a back up for later on If your looking for a solid foundation to build off of...then whats posted here is good...
It's depends on your true needs and what you really want out of your pc.

I think in order to really build systems based on bare bones, mid range and high end, you first need to define what constitutes acceptable play levels in the game for each build.
What I mean by that is what is the lowest acceptable frame rate, detail levels, etc. I think once you have that benchmarked then it's easier to say that xyz system is really bare bones.
My thoughts

Yes, Kelly that is. I cannot help determine the accepted level since I am on a relic of a machine and new to this. I am not sure rF-1 is the correct benchmark at this point. It is old and let's face it, as soon as rF2 comes out of Beta this group will likely jump on that fairly quickly (just like when FM changes versions). However, basing it on a game still in Beta is not very helpful either, lol. Maybe base it on the current iRacing? On the same line, I tried the Ctrl-F last night in practice and I didn't see the current FPS come up. Do I need to do it in a local race not on the server?

Ok Zed if you want to base the benchmark on i-Racing...ignore anything i said and look at what specs/items lawyer posted..that games a system hog..but rewards when you can utilize all it has to offer

Although rFactor is fantastic, its dated and will be replaced by rFactor 2 within the next year or so. You can run iRacing just fine with my recommended bare bones system, but if you cheap out on the GPU, you will likely have some trouble.

If your goal is 'primarily' to run rFactor then you can probably just use that $50 video card for now. Then toss that card out end of this year and put in a $200 card when rFactor2 takes off. By the fall time time a $200 card will most likely be more than enough to run single screen rFactor2 with all settings maxed out. Just make sure you have a reasonable motherboard, power supply and case (ie. can support 1 or more high end graphics cards). My older desktop has an ATI HD 5670 with 512MB and it can run single screen 1920x1080 rFactor maxed out with a rock-solid 60 fps. An ATI HD 6670 with 1GB is $50 currently... this is more than enough to run rFactor maxed out on a single 1080p resolution screen. Currently you can pick up all kinds of nVidia GTX 560 (1GB SLI ready) for $199, these prices are bound to fall noticeably by the fall time. I had a single GTX 570 and it 'seemed' to be running rFactor2 and even pCARS ok on a single screen although at the time I was not using FRAPS or anything to check fps. I now have two GTX 570 in SLI mode and on a single screen this configuration can easily handle pCARS maxed out with very high fps (triple screen another matter ).

I finally got around to popping the case to find out what kind of PSU I have on my machine. I whopping 305 Watts of power. Ugh. I was all set to pick up a temporary GPU to hold me off but that's out unless I buy a PSU first. Looks more and more like this thing isn't worth touching. Just enjoy the game w/o eye candy and my 36 FPS until I can build a new one. I need to find some side-jobs!
