Yes. You need an active display port adapter if your montior doesnt support it.

Are you talking about something like this for an adapter? That is only $8 at monoprice.com No, this likely will not work. If none of your monitors have a DisplayPort connection, then you need an active DisplayPort adapter to run Eyefinity. Sent from my HTC One X using proboards

Ok, I understand what you mean now. The monitor has to actually have the display port for it to plug into. Makes sense now.

I got the PO approved by the CFO(wife) for the fx8150, 16gb ram and gigabyte mobo for $300. I will also get the Coolermaster HAF912 case and a 600w psu. I will upgrade the gpu probably around christmas. I am hoping the price of the amd 7970 will drop when the 8000 series come out in october.

Would I be able to connect 3 monitors using HDMI, vga and dvi? Or does one of them have to use the displayport?

Bottom line is this. If you are going with an AMD card, it is best to have at least one of your monitors with a display port input.
If you are going with a nVidia card, you don't need display port, but there is something about sync and polarity that must match up. Craig can help you more with that.

If you are going with a nVidia card, you don't need display port, but there is something about sync and polarity that must match up. Craig can help you more with that. All three monitors must have the same sync polarity at the desired resolution (which is gonna be the native resolution of the panel in 99.9% of cases) or you'll have to do some messing around. Good luck finding sync polarities for many monitors... so play it safe and buy three matching monitors if you're using Nvidia cards. Three monitors with the same model number have a (very) small chance of mismatching if the Revision number is different. I only mention that to cover my butt - I have three Dell U2412Ms bought over several months that have different Revision numbers and I think one was made in a different country than the other two and they work perfectly. I've even mixed a Dell 24" with two Dell 22" monitors without issue.

Well I have 1 gateway monitor and 1 samsung monitor at the moment and I plan on adding a third so that is why I am going with the AMD card instead of nvidia. I don't want to buy 3 monitors when I have 2 monitors that work fine.

I don't want to buy 3 monitors when I have 2 monitors that work fine. Then if one of the 2 monitors you already have doesn't have a display port, make sure the next one you buy does. Even if you have to pay a little more, it will still be cheaper than buying a monitor and active display port adapter cable. Those are expensive.
