I bought my PC back in 2009 and have only upgraded the video card to a gts450. I will upgrade the card soon but I figured I would get the cpu/mobo/ram done first and then get a new card soon after. This is what I am looking at getting. I would love any input about upgrading my machine. I am trying to stay under $500 for these parts.
intel i5-3470 3.2ghz
| $199.99 | Asus P8Z77-V LE Plus Intel Z77 1155 Motherboard | $139.99
| rebate | -$15.00 | 8gb 1600mhz memory | $69.99* | Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus Cooler | $29.99 |
|
| total | $424.97 |
I figured the ram will run between $65-$75. I will mainly be running R3E, race 07, rfactor and rfactor2. I would eventually like to move up to triple screens since I am only running 2 monitors at the moment. All feedback is welcome! Jimmy

I live about 5 minutes from Frys so I can pick up all of this stuff locally for the same prices newegg.com charges.

Why not get an unlocked i5? 3570K should be in that price range. It is $190 at Microcenter (not sure how far you are from one). I have a very similar build, with the 3570, and love it. I put the following budget together for a full build. I have the budget costs and actual costs tabulated. I didn't update every detail but it is a good summary of what I have been doing. I need to confirm what I spent on the monitors and note that I got the case and cpu cooler at a steal from my brother-in-law who abandoned a build of his own. docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag0xxGmtHDS0dHpLWVJBNlp6clF5VUpBZkViZEYweUE&usp=sharing

I was eyeballing the 3570 Ivy Bridge as well..... But I think I'm going to go new tech this winter once EVGA releases their ATX Haswell boards. I don't have any interest in OCing. And from some of the initial research I've done, the Haswells seem to perform better on CPU biased programs. I'm sure I'll end up being the guinea pig for it. Fortunately my friend (aka computer tech) is excited to see the new stuff...so I've got someone to help get through any teething problems (if any). That said, the Sandy/Ivy bridge stuff is solid and proven tech. And can be had reasonably cheap. The Haswell set I'm looking at is probably going to run about $150 more than the 3570 IB ($400 for CPU/MB vs %550). But I figure I don't upgrade CPUs very often (still running a 660 Clarksdale ), so I'm hoping it'll get me another 4-5 years down the road. My existing system was built in 2010, having only upgraded the GPUs twice (from 9800GT to GTX560Ti to GTX560Ti x2) and upgraded RAM (to 16G).

If you're getting a good cooler then you must be thinking overclocking so the K processor makes more sense. I have the 3750K but haven't overclocked it yet but I have a giant cooler and plan to do so soon If you're not overclocking then stick with the stock Intel cooler... there's nothing wrong with those.

I have never dealt with overclocking so I don't think I will go that route, but I had read that the fan that comes with the chips isn't all that. But if I don't need one then I will just stick with the stock fan.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

If you are looking for general game playability plus normal comping...don't forget to checkout the AMD A10 on the FM2 board. Its a cheap solution and amazed the hell out of me after assign 2gb of vram to it in bios. Leaving me 14gb out if 16 1866 mhz ram and I can play everything with no issues. Benchmarks might look low if you go that route...but they dont adequately test the new AMD architecture cause even if it says 30 fps its 60fps buttety smooth. Later on pick up a cheap 67 series graphics card and it will dual graphics if you want to move to triples on rf2. Cheaper and faster solution then anything intel has to offer right now. You can do the above for less the 400 I believe id have to spec it out for you when I get home. Runs cool and quiet as hell on stock fan too. Its now my dedicated rfactor rig until I havecti hand it ovet to wife for the vinyl buisness Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards

Since I am swapping the mobo, will I need to reinstall windows? I did a mobo switch probably 10 years ago and I didn't have to reload windows but this was back on windows XP. Would there be any issues from going from an intel chip/mobo to amd? This is my current pc with the upgraded GTS450 video card. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113089I also upgraded from vista to windows 7 last year too.

Short answer: maybe. Before doing anything though, backup everything that's important to you to an external drive.
There are many tutorials on the web about doing a motherboard swap. Essentially the major issue is that Windows can freak out if the disk controller is different and fail to load. You also could end up with no video.
What I do is uninstall the video drivers, uninstall (via Devece Manager) all devices on the motherboard (sound, network, etc) then (optionally and last) uninstall the IDE channels. Shut down, swap all the hardware and start up the PC. At this point you'll probably want to crack a beer and sit back while Windows detects the hardware on the new motherboard. Once it's done installing generic drivers you'll want to install the updated drivers that are provided for your MB. I prefer to do these one at a time then make sure the system is stable for a while.
Lots of people just swap the parts and reboot without issues. I was about 50/50 with that method so I take a more careful approach now.

Since I am swapping the mobo, will I need to reinstall windows? No, although Windows will likely detect the new mobo. You will need to call M$ to get them to help with verification. I have done it twice. It is very easy, but does take some phone time. Sent from my HTC One X using proboards

So spazsterian got me thinking about going the AMD route. This is what I found on amazon AMD FFX-6350 FX-Series 6-Core Black Edition | $139.99
| ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard | $134.02
| 8GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz Ripjaw Series | $71.40
|
The AMD chip is $60 cheaper and ranks almost as high as the i5-3470 So I might go the AMD route.

Thats an awesome chip. If you can give me till tomorrow (still fighting putting my damn Tahoe back together) I can recommend you a solid platform. I prefer gigabyte mb my self. Tell me your absolute ceiling and I will get you the most bang for the buck. Are us or canada? I forgot to look.

Also what exactly would you like to do with the comp? Just game? Light video editing (on what software? ) general pc use? Anything more the 4 cores isnt necessary still in today's standards unless you ripping dvds..video editing or do high end graphical work. Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards

Thanks spaz, i am in no hurry. I just want a pc that will the next gen sims like rfactor2 on triples. I won't be doing any video editing or anything like that. So this machine will be for gaming and regular pc stuff but I just don't want it t outdated in 6 months.
