Ya that's a no brainer, If you are going to add a monitor and run AMD card, then make sure your next one had a display port. It will be easy from there. And pricing is not that much different on monitors as more of the common monitors carry it do to popularity of eyefinity.

Yeah I have seen the active displayport adapters go from $18-$30.

So very long story short, got the fx-8120/mobo/ram/haf912 case/raidmax 630wpsu friday night. Started putting everything together in the case. When I went to fire up windows it was a no go for the mobo swap. Tried a few things but nothing worked and went to bed. Next morning I find some more things to try but still nothing. The guy I bought the cpu/mobo/ram from came over and 7 hours later we finally got it working. Had to wipe the drive clean and start over but the issue was the drive was setup from gateway with some weird proprietary partition that we could not access or format. He was able literally use everything in his big bag of tricks to get the hard drive formated and reloaded with windows. For some reason the drive was setup as a RAID but the machine only had 1 drive in it. That was the issue with getting the mobo swap to work since I couldn't change it to IDE or AHCI. Needless to say if it wasn't for his badass hacking skills I would be up shit creek. I am now in the process of copying over my data and installing software.
Good news is it is up and running but just having to reinstall everything will take time. He said he has been building PC's for years and has never seen a HDD setup this way. I will never buy a pre-built big box PC again I can tell you that.

Glad to hear you guys got things up and running. I built my PC last year and it's really not too difficult. Sure I ran into some headaches that took time to hash out, but for the money I saved it was well worth it.

RAID? Weird. Yeah, you're pretty well screwed in that situation especially (as happened to you) you don't know that the disk controller is configured like that.

Upgrading name brand PCs is a major pain in the ass.

yeah this guy was not to be beaten. He would throw something at it and it work for a while, then quit. He would throw something else at it and it would quit. He just kept pulling out hard drives, dvd's and finally was able to get rid of that weird partition and reset up the drive correctly. I know this was a very rare case so I am not worried about future upgrades. I can't wait for the installs to be done so I can really try it out. video card coming this winter.

Hmm, I assume you guys did not re-install Windows? When I originally upgraded my Dell XPS 600, I re-installed Windows and thus the Raid 0 set up did not cause any problems.

he broke the RAID, removed that weird partition, and did a new install of Windows.

he broke the RAID, removed that weird partition, and did a new install of Windows. OK, I see. He would have seen that during the Windows install.

Until he got rid of that 14gb partition it would not allow us to install windows. My understanding is that small partition is where the OS was installed originally on this RAID drive. His goal was to remove that partition and do a fresh install of windows, which he did. I was all set to send him home with so much beer but the poor guy has major liver problems and cannot drink anymore. So I made sure to feed him.

Hmm, interesting. Now that I think about it, when I rebuilt the XPS 600, I used a brand new 1 TB HD for the OS install. Therefore, the RAID 0 set up on the dual 250 GB drives was not an issue. I later re-formatted those drives and have them sitting in my desktop PC as back up drives. I also used one of them for the Windows 8 beta OS.

The only issue I am having now is I am trying to finish the windows updates. When the last 36 updates finish running I click on the windows pearl and then choose restart. When I do that I get an immediate BSOD! I did this a few times, even loading 1 update at a time and the same results. I went back to the restore point before I got the BSOD and did those updates. I will probably tackle this this weekend, and load 1 update, reboot and see what happens. I will just have to wait for the BSOD to come up again and this time make note of the errors to see if I can narrow it down.
Otherwise the machine is running great. Got blancpain loaded and most of my tracks and running great.

Here is my exact build amd fx-8120 / 16gb gskill ram gigabyte / GA-970A-UD3 ATX mobo = $300 Haf 912 case = $54.99 Raidmax 630w psu = $89.99 - $40 rebate - $50 uverse debit card = $0 Cooler Master 200mm blue fan = $15 Case came with 2 120mm fans. It had one on the back and one on the front. I moved the one on the front to the top as an exhaust fan and put the blue 200mm fan in the front. Now just need to change the leds on the front from red to blue/white. I would also like to cut out one of the side panels and put a window in it to show off the guts. The psu also has a blue light on it. But those are future plans. Kind of what this guy did to his.

Check the bios on the mb for newer version. Your updates may pertain to the fx series proc and windows is not getting the right info off the mb. Also..check that your ram is default and not overclocked.
